Harry Tonkin
Position and service
Positive Behaviour Support Lead.
What attracted you to working with Transforming Support?
I was drawn to Transforming Support because of its commitment to person-centred support and the belief that meaningful community access is fundamental to wellbeing, independence, and a good quality of life for the people we support.
What is your experience in your field?
I started working as a Teaching Assistant in a Special Educational Needs college whilst completing my MSc in Clinical Psychology. I quickly found a passion for supporting individuals with a range of additional needs, as I loved the opportunity to get to know each person as an individual and adapt support around what was important to them. For me, person-centred values are key because everyone has their own strengths, preferences, aspirations, and ways of experiencing the world, and support should reflect that. So, I stayed, worked my way up over three years to running a classroom, and further developed by completing my Positive Behaviour Support qualification. Now, I'm grateful to be implementing PBS and person-centred approaches across our organisation, working alongside fantastic practice leaders to improve quality of life for the people we support.
What do you enjoy in your role?
The biggest thing I enjoy about my role is seeing how small changes can have a life-changing impact. Some of the most meaningful improvements come from simple, person-centred strategies. For example, introducing visual tools to help someone communicate their needs and preferences can open up new opportunities for choice, independence, and participation in everyday life. When people are given accessible ways to express themselves and have their needs understood, it can transform their confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life. Being part of those positive changes is what makes this role so rewarding for me.
What do you like doing when you are not at work?
In my free time, you'll usually find me out cycling, enjoying music, reading in the sun, writing poetry, or cooking for friends and family.
What’s your surprise skill?
My most surprising skill is probably Thai boxing. It's not something people usually expect, but I train twice a week and really enjoy the discipline, fitness, and confidence it gives me.
